With science increasingly coming under attack, using humour as a way to get people interested in scientific research is more important than ever, said Marc Abrahams, the founder of the satirical Ig Nobel prizes.

Since 1991, the Ig Nobel prizes have celebrated the sillier side of science, handing out awards － and 10-trillion-Zimbabwean-dollar notes － at often-raucous ceremonies in Boston every year for genuine research projects that inadvertently have an absurd side.

自1991年以來，搞笑諾貝爾獎一直致力於表彰科學中滑稽可笑的一面。每年，該獎都會在波士頓舉行的頒獎典禮上頒發獎項，並附帶10兆辛巴威幣的獎金。頒獎典禮通常熱鬧非凡，旨在表彰那些無意中展現出荒誕一面的真實研究計畫。

The research "has to make people laugh and then think", explained Abrahams, who is also the editor of the Annals of Improbable Research magazine which organises the prizes.

The idea of the Ig Nobels is to capture a person’s attention － even if just for three seconds, he said. Then maybe when they are telling their friends about it later they might realise it is actually "really interesting".（AFP）
