For 53 years, New York Knicks fans patiently waited. Now, they’re paying someone else to do it.

After an NBA Finals that delivered the team’s first championship in many fans’ lifetimes, some supporters are shelling out hundreds of dollars for professional line-sitters to guarantee a front-row view of the celebratory parade in New York on Thursday. The parade is free and open to the public, but excited crowds are expected to be vast along the barricaded route.

For Gabrielle Pretto, a 42-year-old lawyer who lives in Westchester, the math is simple. As a working mother and a lifelong Knicks fan, she was willing to pay someone $750 to hold down spots for her and her three young boys if it makes the potentially once-in-a-lifetime moment “safe and memorable.”
